With community residents leading the way, the mission of CHLDC is to build a strong, sustainable Cypress Hills and East New York, where youth and adults achieve educational and economic success, secure affordable housing and develop leadership skills to transform their lives and community. We serve over 11,000 residents each year. CHLDC has built 550 units of affordable housing, 20+ commercial storefronts, a day care center and a public school. We founded the Cypress Hills Community School, with activist parents. The school offers a dual language, curriculum in all grades: Pre-K-8, strong parent governance and involvement and an integrated ExpandEd model that combines the best of CHLDC after-school education with the school day Our services include affordable housing development, workforce development, adult education, afterschool and summer programming for young people, homeowner supports and foreclosure prevention counseling, tenant services, college access and college persistence services, community organizing for tenants and students, and Cypress Hills Verde, which promotes healthy food access and other efforts to make the neighborhood green and sustainable. Together, our programs strengthen the area's physical and economic infrastructure, provide quality educational and social services, and foster local leaders.
